Ok here it is and just to note i got stuck with this one
I know how much you all loved the last scales puzzle. I have come across another. This one looks very simple, give it a go.
=====
You know that any parcel that you will need to weigh with the old fashioned pair of scales provided to you by the intergralian post office has to be an exact whole number (an interger) of 81kg or less.
If in addition, you are allowed just four weights, which ones should you choose to be sure of being able to determine unambiguously the weight of any parcel you are given to weigh ?
good luck
Little Angel

So i need to be able to weigh any parcel under 81kg using only 4 weights?

Lady Bump
02-09-2005, 09:03 PM

you need 1, 2, 5 & 10 kg weights - add them up and you get 18 kg, now look at the number in a mirror and you get 81 kg.
Smart aren't I :MISSIN~18 :MISSIN~18 :MISSIN~18

Can you?:3rofl3::3rofl3:
Lady Bump
02-09-2005, 10:07 PM
start with the most obvious and simple way to solve the problem
Hmm 80kg, that would be 40kg, 20kg, 10kg, 5kg and ........
Kitkat
02-09-2005, 10:09 PM
:icon_offt I don't think Aussie post would let you send a parcel that weights 81 kg. Work Place Health and Safety have a limit on the amount of weight a person can safely carry. Thinks its 20 kg:MISSIN~18

They do own trolley jacks you know:w7:
Little Angel
02-09-2005, 10:11 PM
But if you chose those, you couldnt weigh say a 24kg package.
Little Angel
02-09-2005, 10:12 PM
Easiest way to solve the problem would be me telling the customers to go to another post office, i can only weigh up to 4kg items...1kg,2kg,3kg and 4kg:14clap:

oh.. I haven't got enough to get the resolution down to solve the problem. I can't tell the difference between 1,2,3,4kg, so I'll start here and work out how to distinguish between just these four.

Megan, I wonder if we are meant to take this thread seriously - I'm starting feeling the big stick of Ms Bumps big stick:14clap:
Lady Bump
02-09-2005, 10:23 PM
came up with 3 combinations for just one weight.
parcel scale weight < = or > the direction of the scale tip
1 > 2
2 = 2
3 < 2
So the first weight is 2kg. next logical step is to use 4kg, then 8 then 16, but you find that you run out of weights again. So I need to extend the range of the second weight. I do this by manipulating the parcel's weight and putting the spare weights on the other side of the scale like this.
4(+2) = 6
5(+2) < 6
6 = 6
7 < 6
8 = 6+2
9 < 6+2
and so I have doubled the range of the next weight.
And so I follow on with the next weight
last clue for tonight:3rofl3: :3rofl3: :3rofl3:
